Another Great Experience at Sol-Toro - Mohegan Sun

If you have a good restaurant experience once, you look forward to going back. After a second great experience it begins to become a favorite,. But after a third great experience in a row, it starts to become cheers - especially when the service is great and "everyone knows your name!"

Last week, a short visit for supper turned out to be a fun time with the excellent service and food we have grown to love. On this night, we decided to try their "fajitas for two," a beautiful display including 4 choices of chicken, beef, shrimp and or veggies. You can pick and choose which combination you want adding up to four - we went for two chicken, one beef, and one shrimp, all of which were exceptionally prepared and seasoned. You can choose between flour or corn tortillas. But be prepared to take half home - the portion is a good size. The vegetables underneath that go in the fajitas were the best I've ever had - firm enough, very tasty and not full of grease, which helped to keep my fajita masterpiece from being messy and dripping down my sleeve.

Our waitress, Coral, was fantastic - willing to take time and check on us. She took real good care of us.

A terrific beer to partner this meal is Negra Modello, an amber, Vienna style beer with malt overtones.

Speaking of the best libations coupled with food, did you know Sol Toro has a list of over 240 premium tequilas that are 100% Blue Agave. Therre are some changes and special news coming out of Sol Toro with Many exciting changes I can't tell about because this blogger is sworn to secrecy. But, think..... if you knew nothing about tequila and wondered what tequila would go best with what meal, where would you go? After speaking to the manager Marshall, i was amazed at how narrow-minded I was concerning tequila. concerning upcoming events and changes at Sol Toro, let's just say you may want to put Sol Toro on your "ToDo" list for after the holidays.

That's all for now.

Jordan's 23 at Mohegan Sun - Better Than Ever!

It had been a while since my wife and I visited the sports bar Jordans 23 at Mohegan Sun. Our mission - our old favorite - the Black & Blue Burger, including cajun seasoning, blue cheese, lettuce, tomato & tobacco onions. This meal isn't complete without the sweet potato fries.

I have to report that it was not the same great burger - IT WAS EVEN BETTER!
The burger seemed leaner, bigger and the additional cajun seasoning gave a little kick that was not too hot, but just right.  Even the sweet potato fries were tastier.  Coupled with a Shipyard Pumkinhead beer on tap, this meal was truly outstanding comfort food.

And what about the place as a whole.  Well it wasn't "some-show-in-the-arena" night, but Jordans seemed to be doing well as compared to the other restaurants we passed. And our service was terrific - I hope you get David.  He was attentive and busy all the time.  Did not hover, but visited our table enough that we knew he was taking care of us.  Good job!
There is also Trivia that plays throughout that you use your iPhone or Android app to play against other players across the country.  Nice addition.

The BVR (Binbin Value Rating) certainly can't add up to a royal flush for a sports bar.  But I'd give them a Straight-flush, with their service putting giving them an edge over the usual casual dining full house ranking. This place is definitely a Binbin favorite.

Oh, and during the summer, try their lobster sandwich - but make sure you're hungry!  It's big & full of lobster.

That's all for now.  You can check other Dining reviews by clicking on the labels section to the right of this post.

It's Mohegan Sun "Sun"day!

Casino Security Has Turned Into Country-wide Network - Cheater Caught at Mohegan Sun!
Mohegan Sun, one of the world's largest casinos, began sharing intelligence a decade ago with its giant, next-door rival in southeastern Connecticut, the Foxwoods Resort Casino. Although it was once less common for casinos to talk with competitors, the online network has evolved through mutual self-interest.

Workers at Mohegan Sun monitor feeds from roughly 4,000 cameras, scrutinizing the dealers as closely as they do the players. On a given day, they could be on the lookout for as many as hundreds of faces, some pointed out by other casinos, others by law enforcement agencies seeking criminals who might be trying to launder money. If a camera picks up somebody who's been flagged for possible cheating, security officials said they'll watch the person play before taking any action.

The man at the poker table had a ball cap pulled down almost to his nose, but his glance up at a television screen revealed a familiar face to Mohegan Sun's surveillance cameras: A photograph of the known card cheater had been sent by bulletin to casinos around the country. Within hours, the bettor was arrested, accused of marking cards with invisible ink.

The man arrested Sept. 15, Bruce Koloshi, 54, was the subject of a security bulletin issued two weeks earlier by officials in Louisiana. He had cheating convictions in Iowa and Nevada and was facing charges in Louisiana that he marked cards last month at the L'Auberge Casino in Baton Rouge. After the surveillance officer spotted him, Koloshi was seen moving his hands away from the Mississippi Stud poker table, allegedly for the marking substance, and cameras detected the ink that wasn't visible to the naked eye. Koloshi wore special contact lenses to see the ink, authorities said.

New England Casino Dining Reviews - a Yearly Look

After SolToro's stunning visit and review, I was wondering about previous dining reviews.  I have found out two things:
1)  I need to visit Twin River and
2) I eat at Mohegan Sun much too often.

So, after 260 posts, with various references to dining specials, candy wars, and the occasional rant on service, here are the rankings so far, according to the BVR (Binbin Value Rating).  Remember the BVR is based on the ranking of winning hands in the video poker game of JOB (Jacks or Better).  The best to the worst is Royal Flush, Straight Flush, 4-of-a-Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, 3-of-a-kind, 2-pair, JOB pair, and nothing, nada, zero, empty set, "no soup for you!"

SolToro, Mohegan Sun - The BVR = A ROYAL FLUSH! Jackpot!

Hash House A GoGo, Mohegan Sun - The BVR = A ROYAL FLUSH! Farm fresh food with portions that can feed an army.

Shrine Sushi Special, MGM at Foxwoods - The BVR = Straight Flush

Buffet at Newport Grand - The BVR = Full House

Virgils, Mohegan Sun - The BVR = Full House!

California Pizza Kitchen, Foxwoods -  The BVR = A Flush
It's always an uplifting happening to your game!

Oxford Grill, Oxford Casino - The BVR = Flush

Margaritaville, Mohegan Sun, - The BVR =A Flush
Remember, a flush isn't just 5 cards in a row (a straight), there all the same suit. The "Fun" at Margaritaville makes the difference between a straight and a flush.

Buffet at Hollywood Casino, Hotel & Raceway - The BVR = Straight

Geno's Fast Break Food Court, Mohegan Sun - The BVR = Only Two Pair

Lansdowne, Mohegan Sun - The BVR = Two pair, 8's & Aces. Deadman's Hand. Definitely not a winner!

Please note - A casual restaurant not mentioned that is our "go to" meal before a CT SUN basketball game is BBP at Mohegan Sun, Bobby's (as in Flay) Burger Palace.  I haven't officially reviewed it, but I'd give it a BVR = straight flush for gourmet burgers, terrific fries and consistancy in meals and service.

That's all for now.

Mass Casino Update #2
  • April 2nd - Boston residents narrowly support Suffolk Downs’s plan to develop a casino at the track, though the intensity of the opposition could make for a tough campaign if the gambling proposal were to face a citywide vote, according to a Boston Globe poll
  • April 2nd - A hearing in a federal lawsuit that seeks to open Southeastern Massachusetts to commercial casino bids has been delayed until 11 a.m. April 11.The Massachusetts Expanded Gaming Act gives the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian tribe first preference for a Region C casino, which prompted KG Urban Enterprises to file suit arguing that the tribal preference is a "race-based set aside" that violates the U.S. Constitution.
  • At the same time in East Springfield - residents met with an anti-casino group Monday night to talk about possible negative effects of having a casino in their backyard. Members of Citizens Against Casino Gaming said problems with robberies, car thefts and aggravated assaults will increase if a casino comes to Springfield.

I will try to include up-to-the-day news concerning the on-going process of Casino Expansion in Massachusetts. So, watch for daily Mass headlines as a part of each post.

It's Mohegan Sun "Sun"day - and SolToro is Today's Feature

Let me start with a situation fin Video Poker that some of you can relate to - being dealt 5 cards, none of which should be held. (especially in Deuces Wild.) Ok, no big deal (pun intended) but on the draw of your next 5 cards you are pleasantly surprised with a flush, or a full house.....or maybe even a Royal Flush! (yes, it happens). Well that best describes my dining experience at SolToro.

So, after reading this review, go try
 SolToro

According to the Mohegan Sun website "this authentic Mexican restaurant features handmade guacamole and tortillas. The bar menu includes a list of eighty tequilas, offering blanco, reposado, and anejo selections, specialty margaritas and tequila-based cocktails." Three years ago, I first visited SolToro and found poor service, good but overly priced food, a loud party atmosphere where socializing with people at your table was impossible, and little concern for it's patrons. Sounds pretty bleak!  I decided to try it again, and I am so glad I did. I introduce the new SolToro.

SERVICE: Excellent! We were greeted and seated by smiling hostesses to the very back of the restaurant. We were one of three couples in that area and the music was too loud for conversation. We asked if it could be lowered, and withing a New York minute, it was to the perfect combination of festive background music that anyone could have a conversion over! Catering to their clientele so quickly was just the beginning of the terrific dining experience we were about to have.

Kate, our server, was spectacular. She even helped us take a picture on Instagram for a monthly picture contest. (Specifics on the contest later in this post). Other servers stopped to answer questions or concerns we had (like the music) even though they had other tables. By the time we were ready to leave, I felt as if I had dined with friends.

BEVERAGE: My SolToro Margarita was very tasteful, rimmed with it's signature salt. The portion was just right with a classic balance of sweet and sour. My wife enjoyed her "Skinny Girl" margarita, which has a splash of soda and no salt.

THESE BEVERAGES ARE INCLUDED IN THEIR SUNDAY TO FRIDAY BITES AND DRINK SPECIALS FROM 4:00-5:30pm. The appetizers looked very enticing, but we were glad we held off to have room for the night's food.

FOOD: After ordering, a large order of warm tortilla chips are brought to your table with a thin, extremely tasty salsa, different from the usual chunky variety, with just enough heat for most palates.  You won't find the usual combos on this menu. Instead, you will find great authentic Mexican food, tweaked to the side of gourmet, with reasonable prices. My Chile Relleno & Enchilada combo was absolutely delicious - and one of the biggest chile rellenos I've ever had. My wife loved her Mixed Grill - Cilantro marinated filet Mignon, pork tenderloin, and chipolata-adobo chicken, all served on a bed of plantains and a trio of delicious sauces. The price for the mixed grilled was $26, which might  sound a little steep, but the value of gourmet preparation and taste was worth every penny. Most Mexican entrees are between the $13-$15 range and are accompanied with authentic rice and re-fried beans, some of the best re-fried beans I've ever had. You can check the menu online, since their their is too much for me to cover here.

DESSERT: While not hungry anymore, we felt we were on quite a roll, so we shared two desserts. Both were outstanding! The Chocolate Banana Burrito was like the combination of two desserts - the burrito soft shell around the soft banana on top of a chocolate sundae, with pumpkin seeds added throughout ( I loved the pumpkin seeds...and the burrito....and the....well, you get the idea!). Not to be outdone, our second dessert was very different, and something you MUST try - the Chipotle Brownie. It is accompanied with cinnamon ice cream, and the soft, decadent brownie has a slight amount of heat from the chipotle. It was one of the best desserts I have ever had - and anyone who knows me will agree that I know and love my desserts!

PROMOTION: Everywhere you look , you see sombreros. If you take a funny, interesting, or maybe serious picture and send it through Twitter or Instagram @ SolToro  #SolToroSombrero, you will be entered into a contest to win $50. This is an ongoing promotion each month. Believe me, if you put on the sombrero and you can't help but smile.  Check with the restaurant to be sure I got this info correct, I was still in Chipotle Brownie heaven when it was explained to me.

REMINDER to SUN SEASON TICKET HOLDERS: You have a 20% discount on food through the regular season.

The BVR rating (Binbin's Value Rating) - A ROYAL FLUSH!

I would like to thank the staff, our server Kate, and General Manager Marshall Crane for making our night one of the best dining experiences at Mohegan Sun in years. Marshall did say they will be tweaking the menu to include possible explanations and pairings of the many brands of tequila to the food menu. This would include suggestions for the tequila that would best enhance that specific entree. If the best beer brewpubs do this with beer pairings, then why not tequila? I think it's a great idea to educate those of us who still think tequila is all the same. Bravo, SolToro!

That's all for now!

Foxwoods - CPK Dining, and Improved Video Poker

In a recent visit to Foxwoods, I noticed three important factors to consider visiting, or re-visiting one of the largest Casinos in the World.

1)  First, a constant value with great food and service is the California Pizza Kitchen, which they also call CPK (OMG, too bad we've gotten so lazy as a society that we can't say complete words any more - LOL).  The service has been consistently attentive with a smile every time we visit.  My wife and I love their salads - particularly the Thai Crunch and Mediterranean Chicken Salads. A smaller portion is always an option, and a complete meal!  Stop in if you haven't been in a while.
The BVR rating (Binbin's Value Rating) - A Flush
It's always an uplifting happening to your game!

2)  It seems that Mr. Butera, or whoever is involved with the gaming floor, has been listening to some of our complaints concerning the pitiful video poker inventory.  I found the Great Cedar Casino vastly improved with new machines, better paytables, and a fresher feel.  Quarter VP players are still left with 8/5 JOB and 7/5 Bonus, but I did find 8/6 JOB at $1 denomination.  Also, many new games have been introduced - Ultimate X, and Ultimate 4 of a Kind to enhance the 3, 5, & 10-play already there.  And, while I admit to not visiting that casino lately, it seems more progressives are available.
I also saw 9/6 Double Double Bonus VP in the Rainmaker Casino.

NOTE - always check the denomination of the machine before playing!  I can't tell you how many times I have play a nickel slot/VP only to find it was actually $5 - OOPS!

It was a good visit.  I think I'll visit again soon!

That's all for now.

Trip Report Part 2 - Oxford Casino, Oxford Maine

A summer trip to Maine is a great vacation idea, whether it includes the inner most camping, hiking, and lakes, or the long coastline. I hope you read Part 1 yesterday when I reviewed the Hollywood Casino, Hotel, and Raceway. If not, go back and read it......we'll wait......

(cue "Jeopardy Theme" music.........)

Now it's time to visit Maine's newest casino - OXFORD CASINO

We stopped at Oxford on our way home. It is about 2 hours southwest of Bangor near Lewiston. There is no parking garage, but tons of outside parking. The front entrance is obviously very new and quite attractive.

CASINO - It is smaller than Hollywood, but they have packed lots of slots in - almost to the point of no space. And while Hollywood is open 8am to 3am, Oxford is open 24/7. Oxford is a non-smoking casino, with areas outside designated for smoking. One terrific idea was the self-service beverage area with coffee, soda and water. If you are thirsty, you can just get up and get something. Free drinks in both Maine casinos are non-alcoholic - alcoholic beverages must be bought and cannot be comped by law.

Table games include Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, Mini-Baccarat, Three Card Poker, Ultimate Texas Hold'em, Mississippi Stud Poker, Let-It-Ride and recently added Pai Gow Poker. Minimums were about $5 - $10 and up on BJ, everything else $5.

They have just over 800 slots, packed together. In using the minimal space there is, this casino floor feels like a sardine can - and it was a Monday afternoon with no big promotions, it was filled with people! The previous year's earnings and visitation proves its popularity, and has produced revenue beyond the expected numbers. To their credit, their slot inventory is very new, and very diverse. New slots such as "Family Guy," "NASCAR," and the latest Aristocrat, IGT and Williams machines highlight the slot inventory.

The video poker is not good. The only barely playable game is 8/5 DDB. Quarter players are stuck with 7/5 JOB and 6/5 Bonus with the same pay tables for $1 players. What is with Maine and their poor Video Poker? At least you can play VP at one of the bars, but you still have pay for your alcoholic beverages. NO comps for you!

THE REWARDS CLUB -  redemption for play is $1 in equals 1 point; 500 points equals $1 of rewards. A great innovation as part of their rewards club called "The Loyalty Club" is the Club Partners, which include discounts for over 20 local businesses. More casinos should take this idea and develop it to connect with local businesses.  (Mohegan Sun has spun it's own variation of this idea in its Mass Casino license application in Palmer.)

DINING - 2 options. the Oxford Grill, open weekdays at 11:00, but on the weekend at 7:30 for breakfast; and the Oxford Express, open 24/7 featuring sandwiches, soups and pastries. We ate at the Oxford grill, which is away from the sounds of slots, and is a beautiful place for lunch and dinner - simple, modern decor with a relaxing feel. We both tried salads. My wife's Summer salad came with Grilled Chicken, Strawberries, Grapes, Oranges, Red Onion, Candied Pecans, Feta Cheese which was not only beautiful to look at but delicious. My Asian Chicken Salad came with Grilled Chicken Breast, Fried Wontons, Sliced Almonds, Ginger Sesame Dressing which ended in a completely clean plate.( I guess I liked it) The serving size was good and the chicken in both was perfectly cooked with a little "char" taste. The Oxford Grill is a great place for a good meal, drinks, and a get away from the business in the casino.

CASINO SERVICE - Everyone was very friendly, but due to the amount of people and crammed rows of slots, the servers certainly have their work cut out for them. Again, Kudos for that beverage station idea!

It was a great trip, finally seeing what all the hub-bub was about in Maine's newest casino. With all that parking space, my suggestion to Churchill Downs, the new owners of Oxford Casino, is:
  • Build a parking garage to the far side of the casino
  • Expand the casino on the side of the casino
  • Continue building upon the success of the first year.
In previous posts I have outlined the phases of expansion already presented. Please check those out.

That's all for now.

Trip Review - Maine's Hollywood Casino, Hotel and Raceway

A summer trip to Maine is a great vacation idea, whether it includes the inner most camping, hiking, and lakes, or the long coastline.  But my agenda was different - (cue "Star Trek" music please) - to boldly go where I hadn't gone before.  Yes it was time to visit Maine's two casinos.

First, may I preface this by saying I had just returned two weeks before from Las Vegas - staying at three beautiful and large hotel resorts - The Cosmopolitan, Red Rock Resort, and M Resort, which is owned by the same company that owns the Hollywood Casino, Hotel and Raceway in Bangor, namely Penn National. And living near Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun, and visiting Borgata in AC - well, let's just say I visit large casinos.
Now it's time to change perspective, from size to quality.  First stop - HOLLYWOOD.

HOTEL - My first impression during check-in for our hotel room.  The staff was knowledgeable and absolutely interested in giving you their attention.  Friendly, warm and welcoming. The kind of start to a vacation everyone looks for. Parking is free - there is no valet service.  Hotel amenities include WiFi that works well throughout the facility, exercise room, safes and complimentary newspapers. The addition of coffee/tea makers in the room is great - something that is not necessarily a given in many casino hotels. Rooms are bright, quiet, very clean and comfortable. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

(The picture to the right is from our hotel room.  Beautiful day!)

CASINO -  Ok, it's small. I walked the perimeter in 5 minutes. (Consider it the size of Main St
Station or Golden Gate in Las Vegas, or one floor at Newport Grand in RI.) It has table games, but very few. Video Poker, Craps, Roulette, Blackjack (3 tables), Three Card Poker, and Texas Hold 'Em Bonus. Minimums were about $10 and up on BJ, everything else $5.
They have just under 1000 slots, including many of the new favorites - Michael Jackson, More Hearts, etc. In using the minimal space there is, the casino floor is spaced out enough that I never felt claustrophobic. Definitely a good ambiance to the gambling space.
However, their video poker is pitiful.  Quarter players are stuck with 7/5 JOB and 6/5 Bonus, and 7/5 DDB.  And the pay tables don't improve for $1 players.  If there is legislation that requires these poor pay tables, I'd love to know about it.  Otherwise, there is no excuse!  And the High Limit Area has no VP at all.
Rewards club told to me that on average (with slots), $600 in = 1 point, 1 point = $1.

DINING - 2 options. the Buffet and the Take 2 Snack Bar.  While the snack bar seemed to have a good menu, especially for breakfast, we decided to try the Buffet.  Unfortunately for them, I have eaten at many of the best at many casinos from Vegas, Biloxi, Atlantic City, New England, etc....   So, here goes
BUFFET - the Good: 1) the price.  Brunch was around $12.  2) Staff service, friendliness, and a pleasant space.  3) Food - make-your-own-hamberger bar was a nice touch, shrimp were perfectly prepared for pickin' and eatin', and the carrot cake and brownie pudding were the highlights of the dessert bar, although the cheesecake and pie (yes I love my desserts) were equally as good.
BUFFET - the Disappointing: 1)  The entrees were rather "blah."  The salad bar looked tired and unkempt, and the Asian selections were not he quality you'd expect - except the pot stickers, which were tasty.  2) It wasn't a large spread.  Maybe  including breakfast items limited the dinner options.  If that's the case, the dinner options should be a better quality.

ENTERTAINMENT - A good size stage overlooks the casino.  Live entertainment takes center stage every Friday & Saturday night at The Sound Stage Lounge, featuring the best in local and regional music in a uniquely-intimate venue. On Sunday nights, Karaoke is King!  While I was playing in the casino, I was impressed with some terrific local talent.  Very entertaining.

CASINO SERVICE - It was also interesting to me how much of a locals casino it was.  As well as catering to mugs like me visiting from afar, and also entertaining Canadian tourists a few hours away, Hollywood Casino really seems to take care of it's regular patrons, with many slot attendants were on a first name basis with the clientele.  I heard one slot attendant tell one gentleman that his wife was on the other side of the casino, like longtime buddies.

BANGOR - The City of Bangor seemed alive with a Jimmy Buffet tribute band playing in the park next to the casino. It seemed alive, and full of specials with Maine lobster and beer.  We ate and drank at the Sea Dog Brewing Co. and had a great time.  But the best part of this place is the beer!  We like our beer here in Bin household - quality, not quantity!  Their seasonal ale had hints of subtle grape and was very refreshing with my grilled Crab & Havarti sandwich.  In the picture above from our hotel window, it was a stone's throw away before the bridge - highly recommended!

All and all a pleasant casino with a great hotel.  I would visit again next summer, and I suggest you do the same!

That's all for now.

You may have heard of Geno Auriemma, the UConn Women's Basketball coach who has led them to 8 national championships. Dining here includes dishes ranging from Italian, Asian, Mexican, deli sandwiches, salads, desserts and more. The decor includes portraits of Geno, Asst Coach Daley, and past players such as Rebecca Lobo, Nykesha Sales & Jennifer Rizotti. Over the many years it has been open, I have eaten there many times, and I have heard good things about their fried seafood and Asian cuisine. Today, however, I wish to comment on it's "Deli" menu.

First of all, it's considered by Mohegan Sun as casual dining, probably because of the "food court" moniker. But casual doesn't necessarily mean good or in-expensive dining!

We tried three different sandwiches. The Buffalo Chicken wrap, in which the wrap was surprisingly soggy, the Roast Beef Horseradish Wrap, which was good, and days before I tried a panini with Prosciutto that was very greasy and extremely salty. The menu says it's served with a pickle, kettle chips (not any more, they now serve regular old potato chips) and (non-descript) macaroni salad, which was ok. For the price, I would expect a higher quality of food - wraps are $10, Paninis are $11. This is not cheap dining. Casual atmosphere, yes - casual in price, no.

One little note - When I asked for tap water instead of paying $3 for a 12oz. bottle of water, the server went in back and poured a cup of luke warm water from the sink where they wash things and handed it to me. Really? ...that's all they can serve someone who just wants clean water, and maybe a little ice? There should be a law against that.

The BVR rating (Binbin's Value Rating) = Only Two Pair
It'll get you through when you're hungry and need a relatively quick meal when needed, but is really a higher priced, step up from the mall food court.

Does Mohegan Sun have Too Many Pricey Restaurants?
In my opinion - yes! Besides Johnny Rockets, where else can you get a cheap meal? In case you are new to visiting casinos, a staple of every casino used to be the "coffee shop," where you could get a good meal - especially breakfast or lunch - that didn't cost an arm and a leg. At least Foxwoods has Fuddruckers, Nathans, and Subway. Let's hope when they open their new retail area that it includes some cheaper options.

That's all for now.

"Sun" Sunday featuring Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville

"Wastin away again in margaritaville..."

Wait a minute - Margaritaville is not just a "local drinking hole, " it's a family restaurant, an entertainment venue, a store and more!

Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, located in Casino of the Wind, is Jimmy Buffett's island escape that "brings diners from the woodlands of Connecticut to the warm beaches of the Florida Keys." Mohegan Sun is its only New England location.

I have visited Margaritaville at Mohegan Sun more than a few times in the past. So, let's start with a brief dining review:

I find that the service is usually good, but a little slow at peek times. The servers are very friendly, and one time included a server on stilts for the kids. (pretty cool.)

I consider the food overpriced, but read the rest of this post before using that as the criteria for visiting. One time I ordered Cheeseburger in Paradise and I thought it was small, and the meal was not really worth the price. (Matter of fact, if you are gambling and looking for a break and a bite to eat, don't bother here.)

I would gladly suggest three menu items which I love to order.
First, try the Volcano Nachos - an excellent appetizer that could feed a family of four! Topped with chili, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, jalapenos, tomatoes, and scallions.
Try their Cuban Sandwich for your entree, and then save room to share their (drum roll, please)
Chocolate Hurricane - Warm dark chocolate brownie layered with Edy’s vanilla bean ice cream, hot fudge, whipped cream, and chopped macadamia nuts.

The special drinks are very interesting. They even serve up those margaritas from an eight-foot tall giant blender! And while I'm not much of a mixed, fancy-type-of-drink person, many friends have commented on their wonderful mixed drink menu.

The restaurant's entertainment factor include boats made into tables, Jimmy Buffet music & videos, and a hurricane advisory every hour - the good kind, not the real thing.  The atmosphere is a lot of fun.  It's a great place to bring the family before a concert or CT Sun game - but get there early!

The BVR rating (Binbin's Value Rating) = A Flush
Remember, a flush isn't just 5 cards in a row (a straight), there all the same suit.  The "Fun" at Margaritaville makes the difference between a straight and a flush.

Don't forget the retail boutique - grab some souvenirs to take home; you'll find everything from T-shirts and flip flops to Jimmy Buffett CDs and Frozen Concoction Makers.

Mohegan Sun "Sunday" - Virgil's Dining Review

Virgil's Real Barbecue

Virgil's boasts being the original New York City barbecue restaurant.  They also say they have evolved over the years to become a gathering place known for warm service and exceptional barbecued ribs, chicken, brisket and pork, and this blogger's experience would agree.

If you were a fan of Bubba's BBQ, I think you will be pleased at the same location with Virgil's. The restaurant basically looks the same. It was quite noticeable that there weren't many patrons, but it was a Wednesday night, and the casino itself was rather sparse as well.

So here is what we found:
Prices - similar to Bubba's.
Menu - smaller than Bubba's.
Quality - better then Bubba's!
We found this dining experience to a an unexpected pleasure, with great service and good food.

Being self-professed beer snobs, my wife and I were pleased with the beer offerings. (By the way, if you don't know about a specific beer dining out, simply ask for a sample. Most places interested in the customer will happily help out.)  We tried an appetizer and a beer as starters - I suggest the Rogue Hazelnut Nectar for a heavier flavored craft beer that went well with the huge order of hush puppies that is accompanied by maple butter. They were delicious, reminiscent of vacations in Myrtle Beach where the the hush puppies are "to-die-for." See picture below.

For our entree, we tried the "pick two," a selection that includes two meats and two sides. (You can also chose a "pick-three" and "The Pig-Out - ribs, brisket, pulled-pork and chicken!)  We chose the pulled-pork, which was tender with just the right amount of Memphis style sauce mixed in - and the Memphis Ribs. The ribs were three large pork ribs with a tasty dry rub that was packing some heat. Sauces on the table ranged from mild Memphis (with the typical Memphis sweetness) to hot and Jalapeno. Small but delicious cornbread accompanies the meal.
Our sides, collard greens (which were some of the best outside of the south we have had) and savory hickory baked beans rounded out a terrific meal.
As far as amount of food?  This was split between two, and we still took a sampling of everything home.

By the way, I hope you have the luck of the draw to have Heidi as your server. She was delightful, helpful, and always with smile.

The BVR rating (Binbin's Value Rating) = Full House!
Ok, so, it's not Aces with a kicker, but would you really think a rib joint would be? On the other hand, if you're looking for good quality food, service, and a casual atmosphere that you need every once and a while, go to Virgil's. Just like that full boat in VP, it's always what you need when you get one.  A little pricey, but you get what you pay for....and more!

That's all for now.  Tomorrow's blog is about "Sting" in concert and a rant on the American concert audience.

Newport Grand Trip Report

It was a dark and dreary night, and the storm raged around us.  Someone said to the Captain, "Captain, tell us a story."  And so the Captain said, "It was a dark and dreary night, and the storm raged..."

Friday night was a tropical storm, and yet, my wife and I still ventured out to the Newport Grand Casino in Newport, Rhode Island.  I don't think I had visited more than once since it was a Jai Alai Fronton, so it was worth the visit - a visit that proved surprisingly good.

The Facility:
Yes, it's small and it doesn't take long to look around each floor.  While old and still has memories of it's Jai Alai days of the 80's and 90' it was very clean.  It's a family operation, owned and managed by CEO Diane Hurley, and I was pleasantly pleased.  It has 3 floors - a top floor for smoking, bottom floor for non-smoking, and lower floor that includes some slots, the Grille and the Buffet, as well as a bar that features the Newport Storm beers on tap, as well as standard craft brews such as Newcastle & Sam Adams.  I had the Blueberry Newport Storm, which I though was quite good and fresh.

The Buffet:
Small - but very good.  This buffet would put the small buffets in downtown Las Vegas to shame.  Tender, juicy prime rib, delicious stuffed shrimp, and a salad bar that was fresh and had many items not seen in an ordinary salad bar.  It's deserts were small and very tasty, so you could try many of the sweets in one sitting.  All being a Friday night, it was the Prime Rib and Seafood night for $19.95 - including Turkey, Ham, Baked Scrod, Sautéed Mussels, Pasta of the Day, and of course New England style Clam Chowda'.  If you are interested in quality instead of huge quantity, this is a good deal.

Gaming:
With over 1000 slots, the gaming floor isn't necessarily the most up-to-date.  The big marquee-themed progressive slots won't be found (may I add that these are costly to the casinos to include), but the selection was adequate and fun.  The gaming floor is loaded with old and new slots.  And, it feels very roomy, with lots of space and an uncluttered feel.

Entertainment:
Two bands -one upstairs in the event center and the other downstairs in the Cocktail Lounge.  Rocking country with the Stephanie Hansen Band, and the fabulous sound of Gina Wesley were high quality, high energy, and free!

All in all, a pleasant surprise.  I recommend you try it.

That's all for now.

Foxwoods Friday

NEWS - Milford Selectman Unhappy with Foxwoods Plan
Foxwoods outlined a 300,000-square-foot resort-casino at the intersection of I-495 and Rte. 16, including 4,725 slot machines, 125 gambling tables, 350 hotel rooms and numerous restaurants and entertainment venues that would be designed as a “New England-style casino.”

“We don’t view this as a casino, but as a fully-integrated resort and community center,” said Foxwoods CEO Scott Butera. “Success is about having something clean, safe, fun, easily-accessible and something everyone enjoys visiting.” Butera agreed with many of the issues addressed by those concerned over the casino project, including the members of Casino Free Milford, who packed the meeting in their red shirts and lined the sidewalk in front of Town Hall before the meeting. He said mitigation plans that could address crime, traffic, water and sewer are all being worked on. The selectmen said they all hoped to see more details from the developer at this point, given the tight timeframe from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, that calls for a community vote in October.
“The lack of work that’s been done on behalf of the developer makes it difficult to do this project,” Murray said. “If at some point I feel it’s not feasible or the benefits don’t outweigh the costs, I have no qualms about not entering a host (town) agreement.”
