Casino Rants & Ramblings - Hey New England Casinos, C'mon Man!

Ok, it's time to release some of my concerns about New England's Casinos - some generic to all casino gambling, others specific to New England.  Why wait, here I go....

So, Palmer doesn't think Mohegan Sun didn't do a good enough job to sell it?  The New London Day reports today that Mohegan Sun spent $485,000 on its failed attempt to persuade Palmer, Mass., voters to endorse a $1 billion casino project prior to a Nov. 5 referendum, campaign finance reports show. The sum is about 29 times what an anti-casino group spent and equals the price of buying 24 new slot machines (at approximately $20,000 each).  Hmmmm.....maybe they could have spent more since 24 machines is equal to only (approximately) .4% of their floor inventory.

Over the same period Mohegan Sun spent $485,000, the pro-casino Citizens for Jobs and Growth in Palmer, spent $13,145, nearly all of it supplied by Northeast Realty Associates, owner of the 152-acre site where the casino would have been built. Not much support, if you ask me......

The use of social media by the casinos is out of control.  If I see one more Tweet of Facebook entry from casinos about one more jackpot winner from CT, or see anymore pictures of jackpot winners from Oxford Casino in Maine, I'm going to need to sue for "sight pollution!"  We know - Jackpots happen to a few.  Stop already!  Besides - the "selfies" are bad enough from the patrons.  Who cares which bathroom you went to after eating at the buffet?

New Hampshire - why bother?  You know if you have another chance for a casino, anti-casino groups will get together an d it will be strike two!  If it gets further than that, Massachusetts will send more troops up there to stop it anyway.  Ah, yes - Massachusetts - the state of the anti-casino mercenary force.

Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods - your buffets are not worth the money it takes to pay for it, let alone play to earn one.  The quality has dropped, but the prices continue to rise.  The Mohegan's overhaul is a step back, even though they tried to copy the M Resort's Studio "B" Buffet in Las Vegas.
Ever try to earn one on your points? Here's the breakdown:

• Foxwoods Festival Buffet (dinner) - $19.99 (without any specials added).  To earn that on your rewards, it would take $1800 through slots and $30,600 through video poker to earn 20 points. (Stats to get figures taken from vpFree2.com)
• Mohegan is much more mysterious with it's information, but you can imagine it's similar.  And remember, the Sun has lots of full-pay video poker - THAT YOU CAN'T EARN POINTS FOR!

Finally, what's up with the lack of headliner entertainment in January?  Don't the casino entertainment managers know we need a place to go and people to see in the doldrums of the winter?  You know, something besides Reality Fighting.....we get to see that every night on the news and "reality" TV.

That's NOT all.......but it'll do for today.  I feel better already.

Halloween Promotions at Connecticut Casinos

Aren't some people at the casino scary enough without the addition of Halloween costumes?

Well, believe it or not, some people hate Halloween (raising my hand, guilty as charged) - yes I said it, AND I KNOW HATE IS A STRONG WORD!
But alas, it seems I'm in the minority. Even though we teach our children about what negatives to avoid in the world 364 days of the year, I guess many feel it's just to celebrate the grossest, most vulgar, most horrific and, yes, "sluttiest" things on Halloween. Oh, the insanity of it all!

Meanwhile, all the kings of Halloween capitalism laugh all the way to the bank about the strangle-hold they have and the billions of dollars they make on those who are so endeared to the "holiday." (holiday? - really) Oh the insanity of it all.
But I digress.....

This post is suppose to be about all the fun promotions for Halloween in Connecticut's Casinos tonight.  Have fun at these events, please be safe and considerate, and no need to look for me.  I'll be home watching "Big Bang Theory" and "Two and a Half Men."    Oh the insanity of it all!

Mondays at Mohegan Sun Means Over 60 Forever Young!

Here I am at the wonderful age of 57(??) and I feel like my old 1999 Voyager Van - any given day I wake up, and:

1. some little thing isn't working

Wouldn't it be nice to go and get something for being "life experienced" (isn't that a better euphemism than "senior?") instead of the need for more repairs! (Speaking for myself only, of course)

Are Slots Losing the Youth Market? NE Casinos To to Follow Trends

Casino environments and trends change, and in the last ten years, evidence shows a change in how players gamble, what players gamble and where players gamble.

At last year's Global Gaming Expo, John Acres said “Gambling at last is dead.” For support, the man who has been in the casino business for more than 30 years and invented the modern players-club card cited the plummeting appeal of spinning-reel machines for just about everyone under 40.

Many others are worried, too. Which is why, in the past five years, companies have been so eager to latch onto online gaming as a way to connect with new audiences. Even in New England, there is more and more interest in online gaming, since casino gambling isn't necessarily producing the revenue needed. But, as Acres pointed out in his talk, an old product in a new bottle isn’t really a new product, as new as it looks.

Could betting on video games be the last chance for gambling? In 2009, Woody Levin debuted BringIt.com, a website that let gamers open accounts and bet against each other on a host of Xbox, PlayStation and Wii games. Accepting bets from $1 to $100,000 per matchup, the service appealed to hardcore gamers and soon attracted more than 100,000 users. But encountering some technical challenges, Levin chose to shift emphasis toward the social-gaming space, hosting mini-games where players competed for virtual currency. But he believes that wagering on video games has an enormous potential.

Well, you might think, Levin’s just a fanatic gamer with delusions of video-game grandeur. But it’s worth mentioning that, in February 2012, Levin’s startup—the one that let players bet on video games—was acquired by a large company.

The name of the company? IGT. As in, the biggest slot-machine manufacturer in the world, a company that will live and die with the popularity of gambling.

Casinos, of course, are slow to change. “In 25 years,” Valerio says, “when casino attendance is suffering and for-money video games are thriving, there may begin a period of synergy. Casinos will want new blood and fresh business roaming the floor and video-game makers will want a unique ‘live’ experience, and easy access to people wandering around eager to spend money.”

Casinos might jump in soon if only because so many of them find themselves in dire straits. Atlantic City casinos recently received permission to run their own fantasy-sports leagues. When your revenues are down 40 percent over the past six years, it’s not so much about taking risks as trying to survive.

So, it’s not difficult to imagine video gaming becoming the next online poker, with casinos providing facilities and a guarantee of fair play in return for a cut of the pot. Table games ran most casinos until the first slot machines. The first reel slots gave into video slots, and table games began to wane a little. Today, young people visit casinos for entertainment, food and especially clubs - evoking the affect of social media.

Things change. Casinos must change with the times. New England must continue to change with the newest gambling, entertainment, and dining trends, or gaming saturation isn't what the only problem facing New England Gaming.

That's all for now.

Foxwoods Friday - The World's First exhibition of Authentic Pirate Treasure!

Real Pirates
An Exhibition from NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

Real Pirates tells the compelling story of the Whydah, the first authenticated pirate shipwreck in U.S. waters, and the stories of the diverse people whose lives converged on the vessel. Sunk in a fierce storm off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts in April 1717, the Whydah was located in 1984 and is still actively excavated today.

This is a one of a kind exhibition that features more than 200 authentic items recovered from the Whydah – real treasure last touched by real pirates. Ranging from canons and coins and the Ship’s massive bell to personal items that the pirates wore, visitors are given an unprecedented glimpse into unique economic, political and social circumstances of the early 18th-century Caribbean.

Hours:
Sun thru Thurs - 11am to 8pm (last admission sold at 7pm)
Fri & Sat - 11am to 10pm (last admission sold at 9pm)

Ticket Prices:

Connecticut Sun Ends Disastrous Season Today

Mohegan Sun Casino is the home of one of the WNBA's most successful franchises - the CT Sun. While never winning a championship, they have almost always been a winning, playoff basketball team in their 11 year history in Connecticut, after moving from Orlando. Unfortunately, the down side of being so successful is consistently picking low draft picks. This year, the CT Sun has fallen on hard-times - this franchise has fallen and could not get up.

On one side, there are those that say the obvious - injuries are part of the game, whether it's football, baseball, or basketball, so teams still need to deal with it. On the other side, there are those who relentlessly excuse losses because of player injuries. For me, the CT Sun lie in the middle.

Here are some of the non-related-to-injury reasons for the Sun's worse record in WNBA:

• No post help for last year's MVP Tina Charles.
• The influx of tremendous new talent like Maya Moore, Brittany Griner, and Elana Delle Donne to compliment the already growing stars of Angel McCoughtry, Diana Taurasi, and Candace Parker - all on other teams that used high draft picks to get them.
• Years of making the playoffs, but not able to get more than one gem (Charles) in the draft.
• NEW COACH, NEW STAFF, NEW SYSTEM, NEW CHEMISTRY
• No Asjia Jones all season for rehab, thus No post help for last year's MVP Tina Charles.

But the excuse of injuries for the Sun, isn't just an excuse - it's a fact. The last three games, the Sun were forced to play with 7 players available. All-Star Allison Hightower, inevitable Hall-of-Famer Kara Lawson, top draft pick Kelly Faris, defensive standout Tan White, and 3-pt specialist Rene Montgomery - all significant injuries, if not out-for-the-season injuries, at least for the majority of the year. This list doesn't even include to day-to-day injuries to favorites like Kelsey Griffin, Mistie Bass, and Kalana Greene.

NFL Hall-of-Fame Coach Bill Parcells once commented the following about coaching the Patriots:
"They want you to cook the dinner; at least they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries. Okay?" Well, in terms of the Sun, coach Donovan and the Sun, had to deal with the likes of a McDonald's Happy Meal to feed a family of 8 - just no where near the groceries needed to feed a successful season, an incredible over-achieving cast of players, and the best fans in the WNBA.

Let's hope for good draft picks in a lean senior class of college women basketball prospects. Only two names will do for this team from the college ranks - Dolsen (CT) and Oguimike (Stanford). With Asjia back, Tina re-signed (she's a free agent tomorrow!), and Kara back leading the troops, the future will be much better. Hey Mr. Etess, let's add a couple of free agents that can make a difference, while you're at it!

But, let's face it, the only direction this franchise can go is up.

So, after today, the franchise moves on. Hopefully, the future of the CT Sun is brighter - it couldn't be any worse!

That's all for now

Social Media & Promotions - Dale Earnhardt Jr at Foxwoods

Social media is great for following casino promotions and events - some that are only available that day on Facebook, Twitter, etc. When I visit Vegas, I like to check it out because special things happen at casinos without prior mention on their websites, but they include them on social media.

One I found on Facebook is from Foxwoods - MGM - a Question & Answer session with Diet Mountain Dew Driver Dale Earnhardt, Jr.! That's right!
Dale Earnhardt Jr. is coming to Foxwoods for Q & A on September 19!
Race fans are invited to join Dale in the Fox Theater located at Foxwoods Resort Casino at 6 p.m. for brief and intimate Q&A.  Hosted by MRN Radio’s Kyle Rickey, the Q&A will feature questions submitted by you!

Got a question for Dale Jr.? Submit questions now through Sept. 15
~ Twitter at @FoxwoodsCT using the hashtag #FoxwoodsDaleJr

Also interesting was a question from Foxwoods appeared on Facebook a few days ago - "Where's your favorite spot to snap a photo at Foxwoods?" If you have a facebook account, check out the answers - 130 to be exact. Some are funny, some stupid, some a serious comment - but all in all, fun to read.

That's all for now.

Foxwoods Fridays - News From Mashentucket

FOXWOODS RESORT CASINO EARNS AAA FOUR DIAMOND AWARD FOR 10TH YEAR IN A ROW
Foxwoods Resort Casino is proud to announce the Grand Pequot Tower Hotel and MGM Grand at Foxwoods Hotel have each been honored with the American Automobile Association (AAA) Four Diamond Rating, one of the most coveted designations in North America’s hospitality industry. This is the 10th and 4th consecutive years, respectively, both hotels have earned this distinction. Only 4.8 percent of the 30,000 lodgings approved by AAA make the Four Diamond list each year.

AAA's Diamond Rating is one of the few appraisal systems that rely on physical on-site inspections. Members of AAA's inspection team evaluate each property based on comfort, cleanliness, security, and available services and amenities. Each property is then given a Diamond Rating between one and five.

“Our goal at Foxwoods is to surpass our guests’ expectations by challenging ourselves to deliver unique experiences” said Vice President of Hotel Operations Jason Guyot. “We are honored to be recognized year after year by AAA as one of the world’s premier hospitality destinations, and we’ll continue to strive to earn their recognition.”

Their Hotel packages are still available through September. Check the website for specific information. Here are two packages still advertised:

Mass Casino Update #2

• April 2nd - Boston residents narrowly support Suffolk Downs’s plan to develop a casino at the track, though the intensity of the opposition could make for a tough campaign if the gambling proposal were to face a citywide vote, according to a Boston Globe poll

• April 2nd - A hearing in a federal lawsuit that seeks to open Southeastern Massachusetts to commercial casino bids has been delayed until 11 a.m. April 11.The Massachusetts Expanded Gaming Act gives the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian tribe first preference for a Region C casino, which prompted KG Urban Enterprises to file suit arguing that the tribal preference is a "race-based set aside" that violates the U.S. Constitution.

• At the same time in East Springfield - residents met with an anti-casino group Monday night to talk about possible negative effects of having a casino in their backyard. Members of Citizens Against Casino Gaming said problems with robberies, car thefts and aggravated assaults will increase if a casino comes to Springfield.

I will try to include up-to-the-day news concerning the on-going process of Casino Expansion in Massachusetts. So, watch for daily Mass headlines as a part of each post.

That's all for now.
