NEWS - Milford Selectman Unhappy with Foxwoods Plan
Foxwoods outlined a 300,000-square-foot resort-casino at the intersection of I-495 and Rte. 16, including 4,725 slot machines, 125 gambling tables, 350 hotel rooms and numerous restaurants and entertainment venues that would be designed as a “New England-style casino.”
“We don’t view this as a casino, but as a fully-integrated resort and community center,” said Foxwoods CEO Scott Butera. “Success is about having something clean, safe, fun, easily-accessible and something everyone enjoys visiting.” Butera agreed with many of the issues addressed by those concerned over the casino project, including the members of Casino Free Milford, who packed the meeting in their red shirts and lined the sidewalk in front of Town Hall before the meeting. He said mitigation plans that could address crime, traffic, water and sewer are all being worked on. The selectmen said they all hoped to see more details from the developer at this point, given the tight timeframe from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, that calls for a community vote in October.
“The lack of work that’s been done on behalf of the developer makes it difficult to do this project,” Murray said. “If at some point I feel it’s not feasible or the benefits don’t outweigh the costs, I have no qualms about not entering a host (town) agreement.”
