Virgil's boasts being the original New York City barbecue restaurant. They also say they have evolved over the years to become a gathering place known for warm service and exceptional barbecued ribs, chicken, brisket and pork, and this blogger's experience would agree.
If you were a fan of Bubba's BBQ, I think you will be pleased at the same location with Virgil's. The restaurant basically looks the same. It was quite noticeable that there weren't many patrons, but it was a Wednesday night, and the casino itself was rather sparse as well.
So here is what we found:
Prices - similar to Bubba's.
Menu - smaller than Bubba's.
Quality - better then Bubba's!
We found this dining experience to a an unexpected pleasure, with great service and good food.
Being self-professed beer snobs, my wife and I were pleased with the beer offerings. (By the way, if you don't know about a specific beer dining out, simply ask for a sample. Most places interested in the customer will happily help out.) We tried an appetizer and a beer as starters - I suggest the Rogue Hazelnut Nectar for a heavier flavored craft beer that went well with the huge order of hush puppies that is accompanied by maple butter. They were delicious, reminiscent of vacations in Myrtle Beach where the the hush puppies are "to-die-for." See picture below.

For our entree, we tried the "pick two," a selection that includes two meats and two sides. (You can also chose a "pick-three" and "The Pig-Out - ribs, brisket, pulled-pork and chicken!) We chose the pulled-pork, which was tender with just the right amount of Memphis style sauce mixed in - and the Memphis Ribs. The ribs were three large pork ribs with a tasty dry rub that was packing some heat. Sauces on the table ranged from mild Memphis (with the typical Memphis sweetness) to hot and Jalapeno. Small but delicious cornbread accompanies the meal.
Our sides, collard greens (which were some of the best outside of the south we have had) and savory hickory baked beans rounded out a terrific meal.
As far as amount of food? This was split between two, and we still took a sampling of everything home.
By the way, I hope you have the luck of the draw to have Heidi as your server. She was delightful, helpful, and always with smile.
The BVR rating (Binbin's Value Rating) = Full House!
Ok, so, it's not Aces with a kicker, but would you really think a rib joint would be? On the other hand, if you're looking for good quality food, service, and a casual atmosphere that you need every once and a while, go to Virgil's. Just like that full boat in VP, it's always what you need when you get one. A little pricey, but you get what you pay for....and more!
That's all for now. Tomorrow's blog is about "Sting" in concert and a rant on the American concert audience.
