It's an English Prince! - Betting in England

It's a boy!

Betting on the name is now a wild proposition.

The odds are high that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will choose a traditional royal name for their new-born son, according to bookmakers. George has remained a firm favorite across Britain. Philip has also become a popular choice for the third-in-line to the throne's middle name, as both Charles and William have it and members of the royal family are often given multiple middle names.

A spokesperson for Paddy Power, Ireland’s biggest and most successful bookmaker, said the top four names, at the time of this posting, were George (7/4), James (4/1), Alexander (8/1) and Richard (10/1). (Monday morning's posted odds were in parenthesis). The betting company reported 13,000 bets were placed after it was announced that the Duchess had given birth to a son on Monday afternoon.

Bookmaking has been a part of the Brits culture for many hundreds of years. Matter of fact, the passion of the Englishmen for betting is notorious. The term "Bookie", arises from the British bookmaker, which translates literally "the compiler of the books." People who accepted the bets wrote them in a book which they kept in their hand all the time. In 1866 the bookmaking crossed over the ocean and the first bookmaking company was opened in Philadelphia. Later such companies were established all over the world. However, Great Britain even today takes the first place in the world in terms of the number of bookmakers.

The betting won't stop at the child's name. According to Paddy Power, here are some of the additional side bets for the Prince of Cambridge's future:
  • Location of Baby Cambridge's Christening
  • First Official Overseas Visit
  • Age at first nightclub visit photograph
  • Baby Cambridge's First Word
  • Royal Baby Career
  • Royal Baby University
and of course
  • Royal Baby Number Two!

That's all for now. New England's Entertainment listing for this weekend is "royally" postponed due to the "royal" happenings today.

Casino City - A Wealth Of Casino Information

If you look for casino info on the net, there is so much to sort through. But today's post reviews a website that I find very informative, and the more I dig, the more I find.

Casino City is a wonderful website that covers, well, just about everything in the world if gambling.  Casino City has four main categories.

1) Casino & Gaming Directory - a global directory of 6,234 casinos and other gaming properties. This includes news on all the major casino meccas, including Las Vegas Casinos, Macau Casinos, Reno Casinos, Biloxi Casinos, Atlantic City Casinos, and every other gaming destination in the United States, Canada, Asia, Europe, and worldwide

2) Gaming Business Center - For those who work in the industry or for those who are interested in the casino business. The Casino City Press has gaming directories and almanacs. Search gaming properties and executives with our Gaming Directory Online service and their Who's Who directory of gaming executives. It even includes gaming suppliers in their directory of over 14,137 Casino Vendors.

3) Internet Gaming Directory - Covers online gambling sites, ranked by popularity, as well as a directory of 5,180 online slots and our poker dictionary.

BUT MY FAVORITE PART, AND MOST INFORMATIONAL, is
4) CASINO CITY TIMES, which you can get to directly by Googling "Casino City Times." Want to study up before you hit the casino floor? Or get the hottest tips and Playing Strategy on your favorite games with thousands of articles from over 50 top gambling authors and experts? Then, this is the place to visit.

Great Gambling Books

A while back, I reviewed "Roll The Bones" by Dr. Dave Schwartz. I loved it! I'm reading it again because their is so much to sink in.

Then I was wondering what other gambling books I have read and enjoyed - books I would suggest. Well here's a short list of suggestions I have enjoyed and hope you will, too.

"American Casino Guide" by Steve Bourie - I buy this book every year. Not only does it have articles about different games, statistics, and coverage of every state's gambling offerings, but it comes with over $1000 worth of coupons. Using a few of these pays for the book each year, wherever you normally gamble, or with a trip to the top five gaming areas in the US.

"The Frugal Gambler" by Jean Scott - Learn the low-roller secrets for: Staying free at hotel-casinos, beating casino promotions, eating and drinking on the house, playing video poker for profit, getting bumped from airplanes and flying for free. And now THE FRUGAL GAMBLER is completely revised and updated. New information includes a completely revamped chapter on video poker, updated coverage of getting the most out of slot clubs, recent examples of exploitable gambling promotions, and a brand new Resources section, identifying the best sources of player information available from books to software to the Internet. It gives a great perspective on why using your rewards card for every casino is important all the time.

"Million Dollar Blackjack" by Ken Uston - Uston's book has great descriptions of team BJ play. Extremely entertaining and was THE book to read for BJ teams years ago. A bit dated in spots, but not a bad place to start learning about card-counting and advantage play

"Video Poker-Optimum Play" by Dan Paymar - This was the first serious book I read to learn about Video Poker. I had finally realized the benefits of correct strategy, Foxwoods & Mohegan Sun had just been built and it changed my VP play forever. Some say it's simply the best book ever written on Video Poker (and probably the only one you'll ever need).

"Casino Gambling for Dummies" by Kevin Blackwood - Want a good overview of Casino Gambling? This book is a great place to start. Kevin Blackwood has used his considerable casino and casino games knowledge to create what’s more than just a beginner’s guide. Insider secrets and tips for maximising profits while minimising losses when playing all of the major casino games are just the basis of this comprehensive casino guide. In addition, Blackwood explains odds as well as detailing winning strategies, bad bets, how to manage your money and how to gamble online. A "How-To" book that you don't have to read cover to cover!

"Bringing Down the House" by Ben Mezrich - The tale of how MIT students won millions of dollars in Las Vegas is sure to excite and inspire. This is fun reading and includes references to play at Foxwoods as well for a New England flavor.  Reads well, well enough for you to forget that it isn't fiction.

"The Video Poker Answer Book" by John Grochowski - John Grochowski addresses common player concerns in his complete guide to video poker. This is a nuts and bolts book that answers questions that every VP player asks or wonders about. Perfect for players who want to understand the mechanics behind video poker, without becoming overwhelmed by facts and figures

"Zen and the Art of Casino Gaming" by Miron Stabinsky - This book discusses basic rules & strategies, as all gambling books do. But this differs in the way Miron covers the psycology of being successful - or at least enjoying gaming more by realizing what you actually DO control. This book teaches acceptance of gambling reality to help get the most enjoyment out of your play. It's a little different, but I liked it.

Finally, any book about systems to beat slots is a good book - a good book for the author that is. There is NO SYSTEM to beat slots. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY! If you consider buying any such book, drop it and run - run fast and run far!

That's all for now. Tomorrow is NE Gambling Entertainment Wednesday!

Connecticut Casino Competition Coming Closer
The city’s mayor announced Tuesday that Springfield will sign an agreement with MGM Resorts International for an $800 million gaming complex that would be built south of the city and would include a range of entertainment options, along with gambling, according to a report today in the Hartford Courant. It is one of four casinos planned for Massachusetts in coming years and while that state will reap major financial benefits from gaming, the impact on Connecticut is of concern to officials here. Under an agreement with the two Native American tribes that run Connecticut’s casinos, Foxwoods Resort and the Mohegan Sun, the state gets 25 percent of all slot machine revenues from each tribe. That money, which totals more than $1 billion annually now, is then distributed to all towns across the state, money that helps fund essential municipal and school programs . The casinos planned in Massachusetts would erode a large percentage of Foxwoods’ and Mohegan Sun’s customer bases, according to the blog Hartford Business, which calls the planned casinos in Massachusetts a "worst-case scenario" for Connecticut.

Two State Senators Suggest Diversifying Casino Status in CT
According to State Sen. Andres Ayala, 23rd District & State Rep. Charles Clemons, 124th District, it is critical to act now and add 10,000 slot machines at Connecticut's three pari-mutuel gaming locations. Shoreline Star at Bridgeport, Sports Haven in New Haven and Bradley Teletheater in Windsor Locks are operated by Sportech and along with Foxwoods and Mohegan could easily be outfitted with slot machines at very little expense. According to the article in the CT Post, Demographic studies done by the Cummings Report have shown that this type of wagering is conducive to attracting "day trip" gaming enthusiasts by providing locations within a short driving distance of their homes. Connecticut has a strong potential for day-trip gaming, which has not yet been capitalized on. By introducing these new slot machines, Connecticut will retain its place in gaming with a projected excess of $200 million a year in new revenue. As many as 3,000 new full-time jobs, employing Connecticut workers, would be directly created by these facilities, in addition to the economic growth the expanded gaming will bring to surrounding regions.

Kentucky Derby for the Beginner

Churchill Downs Is Where It's Happening Today!

Are you one of those that plan for the date set ahead of time, planning your Derby party,  making it as special as the Super Bowl? Or are you like me.... not aware until it's the weekend of the event?

I must admit, horse racing is not my favorite form of gambling. But the Kentucky Derby is so much more. It's one of the most famed horse races in the world, aptly named "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports." It's step one of the famed Triple Crown in horse racing. For the state of Kentucky, The Derby draws an average of 150,000 visitors each year, including residents, out-of-towners, celebrities, presidents, and even members of royal families.

So, here are a few facts for you beginners out there like me:

1) The first Kentucky Derby race occurred in 1875

2) The Mint Julep is the official drink of the Kentucky Derby. It is an iced drink consisting of bourbon, mint, and a sweet syrup and is traditionally served in a commemorative Kentucky Derby glass.

3) The Kentucky Derby is host to some of the longest standing racetrack traditions in the U.S. Each year, you will find fans sipping Mint Juleps (drink made from whiskey, mint and sugar) and eating burgoo (a meat stew) at the racetrack. Women appear in lavish outfits with big, elegant hats. The University of Louisville marching band plays Stephen Foster’s "My Old Kentucky Home" as the horses are paraded before the grandstands.

4) This is actually a 2-week festival - The annual two-week series of events held in Louisville beginning with Thunder Over Louisville and leading up to the Kentucky Derby.

Kentucky Derby Betting Rules
Depending on where and how you place your bets on the Kentucky Derby, the rules may vary a bit. Having said that, most times all bets must be made at least a few minutes before the race begins. This is why it's important to start doing your research about the 2013 Kentucky Derby now while you still have time. Knowing the specific rules for betting on the Kentucky Derby is important, so choosing how you are going to place your bets is also something you should do as soon as possible.

Types of Kentucky Derby Bets Available
Win - This is a bet for a single horse to win.

Place - This is a bet for a single horse to finish first or second.

Show - A bet the horse will place in the top three.

Across the Board (Win, Place & Show) - This is similar to a show bet, but if your horse wins second or first, the payout is much larger.

Exacta - This is a bet for the first and second places - in the exact order.

Exacta Box - This is like the exacta bet, except that the winners can be in any order.

Trifecta - This bet is for the top three finishers in a specific order.

Trifecta Box - Similar to the trifecta except the winners can be in any order.

Superfecta - This is the toughest bet but one with the biggest payout. It chooses the top four finishers in exact order.

Superfecta Box - This is the same as a superfecta except the order of the top four horses picked does not matter.

As you can see, there are quite a few options when it comes to horse races like the Kentucky Derby. Knowing the options and payouts is important for coming up with a good betting strategy to follow.

Betting Odds on the 2013 Kentucky Derby
If you are interested in placing some wagers on Kentucky Derby 2013, Of course, the big payouts this year will be for exacta, trifecta and superfecta bets. With twenty horses in this year's race, there is a lot of data and information that should be gone through to see who the real 2013 Kentucky Derby contenders are going to be as the race grows closer. Also important is paying attention to the exact odds for the 2013 Kentucky Derby. Keeping an eye on this data as the race grows closer is important when deciding which horses to bet on before the big race. With no clear winner picked yet, there is a lot of opportunity to have fun and make some money at the same time.

That's all for now.

That's all for now.

It's The Most Wackiest Time of the Year....

No, this isn't a commercial for staples and the kids returning to school.  It's the Super Bowl!

Since my Patriots aren't one of the two teams in this illustrious event, I'm just not too psyched up for it.  And yet, like the turning of the seasons, including tax season, Super Bowl Sunday is upon us. The craziness defined by the human element during this one day (or two weeks of hype) is astounding. On a radio talk show today, I learned that the Super Bowl is a paradice (no pun intended) for the sports-better who loves the wackiest bets.  In sports betting, it is probably the biggest day of the year, since even the biggest sports book novice will bet on Super Bowl Sunday - the day that football reigns supreme!

Examples of this ballgame insanity are the types of bets called "props," or proposition bets.  A "proposition bet" is a bet made regarding the occurrence or non-occurrence during a game (usually a gambling game) of an event not directly affecting the game's final outcome. Examples include:
Betting on the amount of balls/strikes thrown by a baseball pitcher, which is where the proposition bet was said to have originated.  Another is betting on which team scores first in a match.  They are common for every sport, wherever it is legal to bets on sporting events.

But, on Super Bowl Sunday, it seems to get out of control!

For Example, Bovada, an online sports betting casino, has "Harbaugh" props mania! Here are some of their "Harbaugh props":
  • Which Harbaugh will be shown first during the game?
  • How many times will "Harbaugh" be said during the game?
or, get this,
  • How long will the post-game handshake be?
Last year, Bodog, another internet casino, had these two gems:
  • How long will it take Kelly Clarkson to sing the National Anthem? (from first note to when she completes "Brave") and
  • What color of Gatorade will be splashed on the winning coach? (six possible colors were listed)
But the craziest I've heard this year really shows that Super Bowl Sunday brings out the best and worst in gambling. Drum roll please...............................................

Will Beyoncé show cleavage during her first song? (I'm not kidding, it is listed in Vegas!)

Wow! Royally Ridiculous if you ask me. But, to each his own. Props to all, and to all  some good luck!

That's all for now!

Racebook Locations & Suggestions: Part 2

Thanks to Mohegan Sun, here is a Beginner's Guide
Getting Started
Some people play their favorite numbers. Some play their home address or a birthday or they see a name that they like. Others enjoy the challenge of handicapping – the art of analyzing the past performances to determine which runner will win. Past performances are just that – a record
of each runner’s past races. This information is contained in the programs that are available at the program stand. With a little time and effort, you can learn how to read the past performances and grasp the fundamentals of handicapping.

Type of Wagers
WIN (moderate)With this wager, the horse must come in first.
PLACE (easy)The horse must come in first or second for you to collect.
SHOW (easiest)The horse can come in first, second or third. This is the most conservative
wager in racing and your safest chance at cashing a ticket.
Quinella (least difficult)Your horses must finish first and second – in any order – for you to collect.
For example, if you bet a 1-2 quinella, you win if the finish is 1-2 or 2-1.You would make the wager by saying: $2.00 quinella 1-2.
Exacta or perfecta (tough)The two runners you select must finish first and second – in exact order – for you to collect. For example, if you select horse #3 to run first and horse #8 to finish second,
they must finish in that order. Make the wager by saying: $2.00 exacta 3-8.
Trifecta (tougher)The runners you select must finish one, two, three in the exact order.
Make the wager by saying: $2.00 trifecta 6-8-10.
Superfecta (toughest)Your horses must finish first, second, third and fourth in order to collect.
The superfecta is the ultimate thrill-seeking wager for a single race.

Daily Double (tough)You must correctly select the winner in each of the two designated races.
Most tracks have an early daily double in races one and two, but some offer additional daily double wagering throughout the card. When the daily double is offered in races one and two, you must pick the winner of race one and the winner of race two. For example, if you like the 2 horse in the first race and the 8 horse in the second race, you would say to the teller: $2.00 Daily Double
2 - 8. If the 2 wins the first race and the 8 wins the second race, you collect!
Pick Three (tougher)You must correctly select the winners of three consecutive races. All three
must win in order for you to collect. The Pick 3 is much tougher than thedaily double, but the payoffs typically make up for it.
Pick Four & Pick Six (toughest)This wager is similar to the Pick 3, except you must pick the winners of four (Pick 4)or six (Pick 6) consecutive races. The Pick 6 is the ultimate jackpot wager in the racing industry with lotto-like payouts because all six must win for you to collect.

Wagering Strategy
The Box - Boxing runners gives you more opportunities to cash a bet. Most
horseplayers utilize the box when it comes to playing exactas, trifectas
and superfectas. By boxing horses, they can run in any order, so long as you
have the right numbers. For instance, if you like #1 and #2 for an exacta, if you
“box” the exacta, you will collect if your horses finish 1-2 or 2-1. It’s not necessary
to box two runners in a quinella, because your picks can come in either order. But
you can make a three runner quinella box. For example, if you box the 1, 2 and 3
in a quinella, you win if the result comes in 1-2, 2-1, 1-3, 3-1, 2-3 or 3-2. A $2.00
quinella box will cost the same as a $1.00 exacta box. The chart below will help
you calculate the cost to make a “box” wager:
$1.00 Exacta Box
2 horses costs $2.00
3 horses $6.00 (3x2)
4 horses $12.00 (4x3)
5 horses $20.00 (5x4)
6 horses $30.00 (6x5)
$1.00 Trifecta Box
3 horses costs $6.00 (3x2x1)
4 horses $24.00 (4x3x2)
5 horses $60.00 (5x4x30)
6 horses $120.00 (6x5x4)
$1.00 Superfecta Box
4 horses costs $24.00 (4x3x2x1)
5 horses $120.00 (5x4x3x2)
6 horses $360.00 (6x5x4x3)

The Key - The box is a great wager when you want to put more than one
horse on top, but if you absolutely, positively love a horse to win
a race, then you might want to “key” him. Let’s say you like #3 to win.
To use him on top of three other horses in an exacta, you would
say “$1.00 exacta key 3 with 5, 7, 8.” The total bet would be $3.00.
(Three bets: 3-5, 3-7, 3-8)
In trifecta wagering, if you like #3 to win, you may key him on top
of three or more horses. For example, a $1.00 trifecta key 3 with 5,
7, 8 will collect if #3 wins the race and any two of the three other
runners come in second and third. This is a $6.00 wager. You can
put four horses behind the 3. You increase your chances by another
runner because two of the four horses have to come in second
and third. This ticket costs $12.00. A $1.00 wager will give you
half the pay-off.
Trifecta key $1.00 combination
3 runners behind the winner: 1 with 2-3-4 = $6.00
4 runners behind the winner: 1 with 2-3-4-5 = $12.00
5 runners behind the winner: 1 with 2-3-4-5-6 = $20.00
6 runners behind the winner: 1 with 2-3-4-5-6-7 = $30.00
7 runners behind the winner: 1 with 2-3-4-5-6-7-8 = $42.00

How to say your wager to the teller
Track / Amount / Type of Wager / Number(s)
Example: “Belmont: $2.00 to win on number 5”

I hope that wets your whistle to try something new.

That's all for now!

Racebook Locations & Suggestions: Part 1

Instead of this week's "Sun-day" coverage of Mohegan Sun highlights and Monday's Maine coverage, I am looking into race books with the upcoming Superbowl.

The New England Casino Race books are restricted from betting on sporting events as is most of the country's casinos. The exception - you guessed it - Nevada. I am not including online gambling in the blog. There seems to be legislation in other states looking to legalize sports betting. As the legal battle involving sports gambling moves to the next round in New Jersey, Delaware continues to experience a payoff from its decision to expand its limited sports lottery involving professional football games.
Which casinos in New England have race books? And are there other places, such as OTB's that exist?

Here is a listing of Casino Race books: PART 1 LOCATIONS

FOXWOODS RESORT & CASINO - They have 50-foot digital projection screens to see every win by the slimmest of margins. Whether it’s horses, hounds or jai alai, place bets and get race info from the touchscreens in any one of 200 carrels.

MOHEGAN SUN RESORT & CASINO - State-of-the art race book with mirobrewery.

TWIN RIVER CASINO - Simulcast racing - Horses, Greyhounds, check days & times.

NEWPORT GRAND - Newport Grand has state-of-the-art simulcast theate. Giant television screens bring thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing simulcast. You can even watch it on your own personal small screen from the comfort of a private carrel. The simulcast racing programs offer the same track odds and track payoffs for full card racing.
Jai alai games are simulcast year-round from Dania and Miami/Fort Pierce Florida. For greyhound racing enthusiasts, races are daily except on Monday and Tuesday. Horse race simulcasts are featured yearly from the nation's leading racetracks such as Belmont, Churchhill Downs, Delmar, Hollywood, Keeneland, Meadowlands, Penn National, Santa Anita, Saratoga, Suffolk, and Turfway. In addition, major races such as the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Breeders' Cup are also shown live.
