Does Anyone Enjoy an Empty Casino as Much as Me?

We are going to have a snow storm in New England this weekend.  No biggie, it's part of the season.  It's also the reason my relatives moved to Florida after living here most of their life!

But snowstorms have always meant a different excitement to me me. During 34 tears of teaching full time it came to have a special meaning - you know what I'm talking about -
SNOW DAY - NO SCHOOL!
A trip to the local casino on a Snow Day was fun, winning or losing.  It was about space, selection, and being one with the casino.  (Pause a moment to reflect)

Ok, I'm back.  Even though it's a weekend, I still always get the wonderful feeling and memories I enjoy when I think about being in an empty casino.

Admit it - I'm know I'm not the only one.

So, to paraphrase Julie Andews,  "...here are a few of my favorite things..." (in a casino on a Snow Day)

Hardly any human beings to deal with:
  • Nobody bumping into you gawking at the scenery, or looking for their spouse.  Nobody having to yell the length of a football field to get someone's attention.
  • Less smoke - especially if it's 6:00 am.  The crispness of the air inside is almost matched by the air outside - well, it's better than usual.
  • Less "mosiers" -  you know those people who walk at a snail's pace.  But even if there are a few, you can easily power walk around them.

Casino Atmosphere:
  • Space - lots and lots of space.
  • Machines and tables galore.  You could try to play anything you wanted, even table games you're not that good at for practice.  Just think, playing every single slot you never tried before.  Or putting in one coin in every Video Poker JOB at the $1 denom.  Why would you do that?  Because you CAN.
  • Limited beverage service that caters to you - because you're the only one there!
  • Space to walk - yes, it's great to get a power walk in at times to clear your head, especially if it's large like Mohegan Sun, Foxwoods or Twin River.

Breakfast:
  • A quiet breakfast in a nice restaurant.  Or, if you are one of those (like me) who are just on the under the level to use the high roller lounges, sometimes you get in because there is no one there!
Now, there are a few things to be aware of.  Less cashiers, less beverage service, some parts of the casino might be closed down if employees can't get in. And be aware - there's always that one person on a scooter that thinks it's Talladega because of all the available space.

(cue music)  "It's the Most Wonderful Time.....in the casino"

But beware - the busses start to come in before noon time.  Plan your getaway accordingly or you just might be there for the day!  6:00am to 11:00am on a snow storm day - casino bliss to a few of us.

That's all for now.

Casino Rants & Ramblings - Hey New England Casinos, C'mon Man!

Ok, it's time to release some of my concerns about New England's Casinos - some generic to all casino gambling, others specific to New England.  Why wait, here I go....

So, Palmer doesn't think Mohegan Sun didn't do a good enough job to sell it?  The New London Day reports today that Mohegan Sun spent $485,000 on its failed attempt to persuade Palmer, Mass., voters to endorse a $1 billion casino project prior to a Nov. 5 referendum, campaign finance reports show. The sum is about 29 times what an anti-casino group spent and equals the price of buying 24 new slot machines (at approximately $20,000 each).  Hmmmm.....maybe they could have spent more since 24 machines is equal to only (approximately) .4% of their floor inventory.

Over the same period Mohegan Sun spent $485,000, the pro-casino Citizens for Jobs and Growth in Palmer, spent $13,145, nearly all of it supplied by Northeast Realty Associates, owner of the 152-acre site where the casino would have been built. Not much support, if you ask me......

The use of social media by the casinos is out of control.  If I see one more Tweet of Facebook entry from casinos about one more jackpot winner from CT, or see anymore pictures of jackpot winners from Oxford Casino in Maine, I'm going to need to sue for "sight pollution!"  We know - Jackpots happen to a few.  Stop already!  Besides - the "selfies" are bad enough from the patrons.  Who cares which bathroom you went to after eating at the buffet?

New Hampshire - why bother?  You know if you have another chance for a casino, anti-casino groups will get together an d it will be strike two!  If it gets further than that, Massachusetts will send more troops up there to stop it anyway.  Ah, yes - Massachusetts - the state of the anti-casino mercenary force.

Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods - your buffets are not worth the money it takes to pay for it, let alone play to earn one.  The quality has dropped, but the prices continue to rise.  The Mohegan's overhaul is a step back, even though they tried to copy the M Resort's Studio "B" Buffet in Las Vegas.
Ever try to earn one on your points? Here's the breakdown:
  • Foxwoods Festival Buffet (dinner) - $19.99 (without any specials added).  To earn that on your rewards, it would take $1800 through slots and $30,600 through video poker to earn 20 points. (Stats to get figures taken from vpFree2.com)
  • Mohegan is much more mysterious with it's information, but you can imagine it's similar.  And remember, the Sun has lots of full-pay video poker - THAT YOU CAN'T EARN POINTS FOR!
Finally, what's up with the lack of headliner entertainment in January?  Don't the casino entertainment managers know we need a place to go and people to see in the doldrums of the winter?  You know, something besides Reality Fighting.....we get to see that every night on the news and "reality" TV.

That's NOT all.......but it'll do for today.  I feel better already.

The Dual Personalities of Palmer, Mass Concerning Mohegan Sun

As I was reading the article in the morning paper about Mohegan Sun's new vision to partner up with Suffolk Downs in Revere, the comments coming out of Palmer Mass reminded me of childlike interactions on the playground at recess time. You remember, don't you? One kid says to their project partner their mommy told them not to work with him anymore, so he finds another partner. Then the previous partner talks trash about their ex-partner to the teacher as if any problem was all his fault.

It reminded me of the soap opera in Palmer after the past week's happenings.
First, let's take a look back and check a little timeline:
  • On August 2, 2007, the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority purchased 150 acres of land in the town of Palmer, Massachusetts, with plans to build a retail center - it was unknown at the time if a casino or any type of gaming would be allowed to occur.
  • In November 2011, Governor Patrick signed a bill allowing three full-scale casinos and one slot machine parlor in the state. (four years of on again / off again legislation for casino gambling had occurred)
  • Last week, Palmer citizens voted down the Mohegan Massachusetts project by only 93 votes, making it apparent that the squeaky wheel of opposition got the grease, but just under half supported the project.
Sure Sounds Like Sour Grapes to Me!
Mohegan Sun had worked tirelessly over five years to bring a world class facility to Palmer by investing millions of dollars into this project with a transparent process of explaining the project to the community, only to be told "Sorry, the city of Palmer won't play with you anymore. Bye-bye!"

Palmer Mass is a New England mill town with great tradition in it's workforce that has been hit hard by the economic recession. According to City-Data.com, their housing market continues to weaken, with housing costing half of the Massachusetts mean and this is accompanied by unemployment doubling between 2000 and 2013 close to 9.5%! Is this a community that can say no?

In August, 2013, Charlie Blanchard, town manager of Palmer, Mass, said "It's a very good deal for the town (and)...It's a fair deal for Mohegan (Sun)" Mohegan's proposal would drop a larger casino in a smaller city as compared to other plans in the region, and developers say their proposal represents the highest value per capita and per household than the other proposals.

So why was it good then and not in November - the proposal didn't change!?!

So why do they wish to smear the Sun's new prospects at Suffolk Downs? The Palmer proposal was deemed suitable by the The Massachusetts Gaming Commission on October 3, 2013 - and we all know how their scrutiny sent Hard Rock, Penn Gaming and Caesars' Entertainment home earlier in the process. But it wasn't good enough for Palmer, eh?

You want to hear about dual personalities speaking? Check this out....
  1. James L. St. Amand, community liaison for Northeast Realty, which owns the property where Mohegan wanted to build the casino on Route 32, congratulated the anti-casino group for its "passion and commitment" in defeating the casino proposal. Then said that "The town needs all the help it can get." I guess not just help from Mohegan Sun.
  2. Jennifer L. Baruffaldi, a longtime casino supporter and head of Citizens for Jobs and Growth in Palmer, a pro-casino group, said "Could Mohegan have done a better job? Yeah, I think so....Shame on them for not really stepping up to the plate and hitting it out of the park." Really? any stepping up against the casino-naysayers would only have polarized the situation more. Too bad the pro-casino groups didn't notice the surge in anti-casino groups across the state and step it up themselves.
  3. Now, we hear the bitter accusations by Palmer bussiness groups of Mohegan Sun's abandonment and betrayal. Equally interesting is their accusation that Mohegan Sun is holding the land (you know the land they bought in 2007!) hostage so no other casino can use it. LOL Palmer doesn't want a casino, but they want to keep that land they don't own for another casino or business. I hope you can figure it out, because it boggles my mind.
  4. And finally, Palmer town counselor and anti-casino leader, sent a letter to the Gaming Commission a letter complaining about Mohegan Sun's business practices, calling Mohegan Sun "...a conflicted casino company more focused on ensuring their financial viability....than they were securing a (casino license." First of all, it's "business, not personal" (thank Godfather). And, The Massachusetts Gaming Commission already said it was a suitable proposal - the same commission that even had the powerful Steve Wynn angered by the incredible scrutiny brought upon the casinos? Does Mr. Burns think he knows more than the Massachusetts Gaming Commission?
Remember that school playground at recess I alluded to in the beginning of this post?

With so many flips and turns in Palmer these days, maybe Mohegan Sun is the real winner.

That's all for now. I will continue tomorrow on more sedate info concerning promos, entertainment and dining in New England casinos. I've had enough soap opera stuff in Massachusetts for a while.

Another Great Experience at Sol-Toro - Mohegan Sun

If you have a good restaurant experience once, you look forward to going back. After a second great experience it begins to become a favorite,. But after a third great experience in a row, it starts to become cheers - especially when the service is great and "everyone knows your name!"

Last week, a short visit for supper turned out to be a fun time with the excellent service and food we have grown to love. On this night, we decided to try their "fajitas for two," a beautiful display including 4 choices of chicken, beef, shrimp and or veggies. You can pick and choose which combination you want adding up to four - we went for two chicken, one beef, and one shrimp, all of which were exceptionally prepared and seasoned. You can choose between flour or corn tortillas. But be prepared to take half home - the portion is a good size. The vegetables underneath that go in the fajitas were the best I've ever had - firm enough, very tasty and not full of grease, which helped to keep my fajita masterpiece from being messy and dripping down my sleeve.

Our waitress, Coral, was fantastic - willing to take time and check on us. She took real good care of us.

A terrific beer to partner this meal is Negra Modello, an amber, Vienna style beer with malt overtones.

Speaking of the best libations coupled with food, did you know Sol Toro has a list of over 240 premium tequilas that are 100% Blue Agave. Therre are some changes and special news coming out of Sol Toro with Many exciting changes I can't tell about because this blogger is sworn to secrecy. But, think..... if you knew nothing about tequila and wondered what tequila would go best with what meal, where would you go? After speaking to the manager Marshall, i was amazed at how narrow-minded I was concerning tequila. concerning upcoming events and changes at Sol Toro, let's just say you may want to put Sol Toro on your "ToDo" list for after the holidays.

That's all for now.

Has Connecticut's Casinos Lost Their New England Gaming Dominance?

Foxwoods Casino & Resort lost its bid for a Massachusetts Casino in Milford by a vote of 2 to 1 Tuesday night, leaving only MGM and Wynn left in Spingfield and Everett respectively.  With the exception of the Southeast license and the Wampanoags, only two remain now, for Massachusetts West and East licenses.

And where does that leave the anticipated expansion of the CT casinos?  Obviously in New England, no where - it's them against possibly  4 more states with casinos totaling up to 10 other Casinos in New England by 2018.

Has their dominance worn off?  I would say "yes."  Both casinos have their clientele being pulled away in all directions.  Twin River in Rhode Island is having tremendous results with the addition of table games.  New York state, especially NYC's VLT casinos, are pulling from the west, and so far, it seems the glitz of the world's gaming industry giants will take residence in Massachusetts.  Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods wont even be the only tribal casinos if both Wampanoag Tribes get their casino wishes in Taunton and Cape Cod.

So, even though they are the 2 of the largest 4 Casinos in the U.S., they might just become just another casino in New England.  If you need another example, check out Delaware's racinos and their loss of relevance in the Mid-Atlantic area.  And we all know where the stubbornness of Atlantic City and their lack of rebranding and aggressive offers put them.

So, what will CT's casinos do to keep their relavance in the future.  Will they become the likes the Luxor of the Las Vagas Strip - just another casino on the strip, or will they strive to be the leader to keep up with class of gaming - Wynn and MGM?

I hope its the latter.

That's all for now.

THIS WEEK'S NEW ENGLAND CASINO HEADLINES Part 1

I took some time off these past two months to do some in the field research covering both coasts of the country, so sorry for the time away. But let's take a look at this week's headlines. I'll start south and head north.

CONNECTICUT
After voters in Palmer narrowly rejected its plan for a $1 billion resort casino and entertainment complex in the central Massachusetts town, Mohegan Sun says it plans to ask for a recount.
In a statement, Mohegan Sun said it would request a hand recount because of what it called "very troubling" technical problems with a voting machine in one of the town's precincts.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission, moving ahead with plans to authorize as many as three casinos in the state, ruled the Crossroads Massachusetts LLC group is conditionally suitable to be granted a license. A group led by Foxwoods announced Friday that it had reached a deal to help finance its proposed $1 billion resort casino in Massachusetts, hours after being told by state gambling regulators that additional financing was one of several conditions it must meet to continue its pursuit of a gambling license.

RHODE ISLAND
The final boxing event of the season at Twin River Casino might just feature the most highly-anticipated main event in years.
"The Pride of Providence" Peter Manfredo Jr. (39-7, 20 KOs) will battle fellow Rhode Island super middleweight Rich Gingras (13-3-1, 8 KOs) in the 10-round main event of "Pride & Power," presented by Jimmy Burchfield's Classic Entertainment & Sports on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013.

NEW HAMPSHIRE
The New Hampshire Gaming Regulatory Oversight Authority decided Wednesday to draft legislation that looks at the state's existing rules separately from those it is writing to regulate a casino if one is approved. Members reiterated support for a beefed up Lottery Commission that would oversee the lottery, a casino and charitable gambling. Ted Connors, chairman of the Racing and Charitable Gaming Commission, suggested keeping his group separate, but others on the panel disagreed and said charitable gaming would benefit from the larger, umbrella group's resources.

New Hampshire voters continue to support expanded gambling, according to a poll released by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center. The results of the Granite State Poll show that 59 percent of New Hampshire adults support opening a casino in the state. Thirty-three percent oppose it and 8 percent are neutral or unsure. That support remains consistent with previous surveys the university has conducted on the same subject.

That's all for now. Part 2 tomorrow will include Maine & Massachusetts Headlines.

Jordan's 23 at Mohegan Sun - Better Than Ever!

It had been a while since my wife and I visited the sports bar Jordans 23 at Mohegan Sun. Our mission - our old favorite - the Black & Blue Burger, including cajun seasoning, blue cheese, lettuce, tomato & tobacco onions. This meal isn't complete without the sweet potato fries.

I have to report that it was not the same great burger - IT WAS EVEN BETTER!
The burger seemed leaner, bigger and the additional cajun seasoning gave a little kick that was not too hot, but just right.  Even the sweet potato fries were tastier.  Coupled with a Shipyard Pumkinhead beer on tap, this meal was truly outstanding comfort food.

And what about the place as a whole.  Well it wasn't "some-show-in-the-arena" night, but Jordans seemed to be doing well as compared to the other restaurants we passed. And our service was terrific - I hope you get David.  He was attentive and busy all the time.  Did not hover, but visited our table enough that we knew he was taking care of us.  Good job!
There is also Trivia that plays throughout that you use your iPhone or Android app to play against other players across the country.  Nice addition.

The BVR (Binbin Value Rating) certainly can't add up to a royal flush for a sports bar.  But I'd give them a Straight-flush, with their service putting giving them an edge over the usual casual dining full house ranking. This place is definitely a Binbin favorite.

Oh, and during the summer, try their lobster sandwich - but make sure you're hungry!  It's big & full of lobster.

That's all for now.  You can check other Dining reviews by clicking on the labels section to the right of this post.

Halloween Promotions at Connecticut Casinos

Happy Halloween Stock Photo
Aren't some people at the casino scary enough without the addition of Halloween costumes?

Well, believe it or not, some people hate Halloween (raising my hand, guilty as charged) - yes I said it, AND I KNOW HATE IS A STRONG WORD!
But alas, it seems I'm in the minority. Even though we teach our children about what negatives to avoid in the world 364 days of the year, I guess many feel it's just to celebrate the grossest, most vulgar, most horrific and, yes, "sluttiest" things on Halloween. Oh, the insanity of it all!

Meanwhile, all the kings of Halloween capitalism laugh all the way to the bank about the strangle-hold they have and the billions of dollars they make on those who are so endeared to the "holiday." (holiday? - really) Oh the insanity of it all.
But I digress.....

This post is suppose to be about all the fun promotions for Halloween in Connecticut's Casinos tonight.  Have fun at these events, please be safe and considerate, and no need to look for me.  I'll be home watching "Big Bang Theory" and "Two and a Half Men."    Oh the insanity of it all!

Foxwoods & MGM Seperate - Massachusetts Interests and Economy the Reasons

The Lion will roar no more in Connecticut - not that it really has. Foxwoods Resort Casino is parting company with Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts International, announcing the end of the licensing agreement that enabled Foxwoods to brand its second casino tower MGM Grand at Foxwoods using a six-month transition period to complete the change.

To be honest, the "lion" hasn't really been roaring a lot in the past 6 years. Except for the terrific entertainment in the MGM Grand Theater, a few outstanding restaurants and the club Shrine, (which has seemingly changed hands), the MGM property has been underwhelming. The small casino has very little personality, and the fact that MGM had to go through Foxwoods' Rewards Club also hampered their clientele, since MGM rewards (MLife) couldn't be connected to other MGM properties around the country. Being able to play in Vegas and spend in Foxwoods, or vice versa, would have definitely increased popularity.

It wasn't the best time
The tribe and MGM — then known as MGM Mirage — signed the agreement in 2006, at a time when both were eager to pursue gaming opportunities in the Northeast. MGM Grand, built next to the tribe's Foxwoods Resort Casino complex at a cost of more than $700 million, opened in May 2008 just as the effects of the Great Recession were beginning to be felt. Here in New England, many thought, as yours truly, that this was an ill-timed mistake. But many in the gaming industry thought they were recession proof - proving to be yet another gambling myth. Originally, the "strategic alliance" reached between the parties in 2006 called for them to collaborate on projects off the Mashantucket reservation. Due to the economic downturn, other collaborative projects never materialized.

Scott Butera, Foxwoods president and chief executive officer, said Friday's announcement was related to an ongoing Foxwoods makeover. "We wanted to consolidate our property under the Foxwoods brand," he said.

And then there's Massachusetts
Both parties were "mutually agreeable" to the dissolution of the Foxwoods-MGM licensing agreement, said Clark Dumont, an MGM spokesman. He noted that MGM hopes to develop a resort casino in Springfield, Mass., which is less than 80 miles from Foxwoods. It seems that MGM is quite confident that They will be chosen over the other CT casino's interests in Palmer by the Mohegan Sun.

"With MGM working toward a significant presence on the East Coast, it was the opportune time to review our relationship (with Foxwoods) and dissolve the licensing agreement." Recent attention to expansion into Maryland, Massachusetts, and even Great Britain presents a global expansion out of Nevada - including it's successful casino in Macau, China.

Foxwoods, on the other hand, is also involved in a Massachusetts casino proposal. It heads a partnership seeking a license to build a $1 billion project in the Greater Boston town of Milford. However, Foxwoods has had lots speed bumps - namely community opposition and making deadlines due to changes in planning. Against Steve Wynn for the same area license, Foxwoods is definitely the underdog.

Foxwoods has made great changes and renovations, due to Butera's national gaming experience. Let's hope it continues. Imagine the likes of Wynn, MGM, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun in a radius of 90 miles. Competition can only be good for the consumer!

That's all for now.

Mohegan "Sun"day - New Rewards Club "Momentum"

So, just when we get used to things at our local casino, they change something accordingly for  "the better." To be honest, many casinos change their clubs - some out in Las Vegas (MGM) change every few years, partially due to acquisitions, and new casino clubs that influence change. Others keep the same club name and basic system, but change the inner workings such as Caesars (Harrahs) Total rewards and Stations Casinos. Mohegan's basic club structure has been in use since the casino's opening in 1996.  Let's take a look at what we know about the Sun's new rewards club "MOMENTUM."

According to the Sun Website, "... You'll earn Momentum Dollars to spend on our world-class dining, premium brand shopping, hotel stays, spa treatments and more. Momentum also rewards your level of play with Personal Achievement Awards that may include Free Slot Play, Match Play or other valuable rewards that amplify your thrills." Ok, so far nothing new. Yeah, we know - your play is tracked and you earn points in two ways, your points to spend and your "tier" points that track your level of play. So, what's different about this new rewards club?

1) According to Mohegan Sun, with Momentum, the more you play, the more power you'll have to personalize your Mohegan Sun experiences. VIP lounge access, hotel stays, concert tickets - you'll have the momentum to achieve them all and the flexibility to choose the ones you want. I guess this means that each person will be able to note their preferences instead of hoping the data collected predicts your interests. If this is true, this would be a good thing. I mean, why let a computer tell them what you like - better you do it yourself. This is especially noteworthy for low to mid rollers that don't use hosts.

2) Reward points to spend on dining, shopping etc., are now called "Momentum Dollars."
What will be interesting is the % of return on your dollar. In other words, on Video Poker with lower pay tables (not the ones that are marked no points earned) is a terrible $270 = 1 point. Slots are less, but considering most casinos use the relationship of 2:1 for VP vs Slot dollars earned, let's just say $130 through = one point.
The trend is to make the earning worse for the player. Let's hope it doesn't get any worse because as casinos go nationally, this is very low.

3) There are now four levels, not three:
CORE - under 600 Status points. Status points are the previous Tier points

LEAP - (600 - 1400 Status Points) benefits including priority Hotel check-in, reserved parking and 10¢ off per gallon of gas at Mohegan Sun Mobil Gas Station. Momentum Accelerators will increase your Momentum Dollar earning rate and you'll have increased access to complimentary hotel stays, Arena entertainment tickets, VIP lounges and Mohegan Sun Country Club at Pautipaug.

ASCEND - (1400 - 4000 Status points) Additional benefits in addition to LEAP Level include a dedicated priority check-in desk and an Executive Host ready to assist you, access to our VIP lounges and 20¢ off per gallon of gas at Mohegan Sun Mobil Gas Station.

SOAR - (4000+ Status points) Additional benefits include visiting any of three VIP lounges at any time, requesting a complimentary hotel suite on the weekend with priority check-in at Aquai and enjoy free Arena tickets along with access to the Express line at the Arena Club. Plus, you'll receive 30¢ off per gallon at Mohegan Sun Mobil Gas Station. Best of all, you will have the benefit of having a Player Development Executive ready to assist you in exploring the limitless options for experiencing Mohegan Sun the way you want.

Their website includes a chart of all benefits and the comparisons to all levels. Check it out. As to whether this is an improvement, or a new "smoke and mirrors" show to take more and give less, only time will tell.

Also, all Momentum points are usable at Resorts in Atlantic City, and Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, which was true recently with the old rewards club.

That's all for now.

I'm Back With the Headlines - I Hope You Like the New Look!

Sorry for the forced long hiatus.  Let's just say it was beyond my control.  But now I'm back with some changes to the design.

Today, as agent Joe Friday from Dragnet would say "Just the Facts."  So, while I was away.....

In Rhode Island
  • Rhode Island gaming officials have approved the addition of 14 table games at the Twin River Casino in Lincoln.
  • Bristol Community College is combining its successful culinary arts program with its not so successful casino management and tourism and hospitality services programs to prepare BCC students to enter those activities and to find employment in the upcoming casinos in Massachusetts.

In New Hampshire
  • NH is considering gambling again - I know, deja vu.
  • N.H. casino panel gets advice from Pennsylvania with rules for future casinos suggesting that the best way to regulate them is with a stand-alone, independent authority.
  • The casino study group in New Hampshire seems on tract to finish writing new regulations to expand gambling in that state by the Dec. 15 deadline.

In Connecticut
  • Conn. lawmakers push expansion of gambling to raise money for the state with video slot-machines at New Haven Teletheater, known as Sports Haven, the Bradley Teletrack in Windsor Locks and the Shoreline Star in Bridgeport
  • Foxwoods, NC outlet center set to break ground on $115 million site at Connecticut casino

In Maine
  • Maine study group recommends gambling expansion
  • Maine sees big revenue increase at casinos

And what about Massachusetts?  Just to much to cover here!

That's all for now.  Let me know what if you like the new look!

It's Mohegan Sun "Sun"day!

Casino Security Has Turned Into Country-wide Network - Cheater Caught at Mohegan Sun!
Mohegan Sun, one of the world's largest casinos, began sharing intelligence a decade ago with its giant, next-door rival in southeastern Connecticut, the Foxwoods Resort Casino. Although it was once less common for casinos to talk with competitors, the online network has evolved through mutual self-interest.

Workers at Mohegan Sun monitor feeds from roughly 4,000 cameras, scrutinizing the dealers as closely as they do the players. On a given day, they could be on the lookout for as many as hundreds of faces, some pointed out by other casinos, others by law enforcement agencies seeking criminals who might be trying to launder money. If a camera picks up somebody who's been flagged for possible cheating, security officials said they'll watch the person play before taking any action.

The man at the poker table had a ball cap pulled down almost to his nose, but his glance up at a television screen revealed a familiar face to Mohegan Sun's surveillance cameras: A photograph of the known card cheater had been sent by bulletin to casinos around the country. Within hours, the bettor was arrested, accused of marking cards with invisible ink.

The man arrested Sept. 15, Bruce Koloshi, 54, was the subject of a security bulletin issued two weeks earlier by officials in Louisiana. He had cheating convictions in Iowa and Nevada and was facing charges in Louisiana that he marked cards last month at the L'Auberge Casino in Baton Rouge. After the surveillance officer spotted him, Koloshi was seen moving his hands away from the Mississippi Stud poker table, allegedly for the marking substance, and cameras detected the ink that wasn't visible to the naked eye. Koloshi wore special contact lenses to see the ink, authorities said.
