Betting on the name is now a wild proposition.
The odds are high that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will choose a traditional royal name for their new-born son, according to bookmakers. George has remained a firm favorite across Britain. Philip has also become a popular choice for the third-in-line to the throne's middle name, as both Charles and William have it and members of the royal family are often given multiple middle names.
A spokesperson for Paddy Power, Ireland’s biggest and most successful bookmaker, said the top four names, at the time of this posting, were George (7/4), James (4/1), Alexander (8/1) and Richard (10/1). (Monday morning's posted odds were in parenthesis). The betting company reported 13,000 bets were placed after it was announced that the Duchess had given birth to a son on Monday afternoon.
Bookmaking has been a part of the Brits culture for many hundreds of years. Matter of fact, the passion of the Englishmen for betting is notorious. The term "Bookie", arises from the British bookmaker, which translates literally "the compiler of the books." People who accepted the bets wrote them in a book which they kept in their hand all the time. In 1866 the bookmaking crossed over the ocean and the first bookmaking company was opened in Philadelphia. Later such companies were established all over the world. However, Great Britain even today takes the first place in the world in terms of the number of bookmakers.
The betting won't stop at the child's name. According to Paddy Power, here are some of the additional side bets for the Prince of Cambridge's future:
- Location of Baby Cambridge's Christening
- First Official Overseas Visit
- Age at first nightclub visit photograph
- Baby Cambridge's First Word
- Royal Baby Career
- Royal Baby University
- Royal Baby Number Two!
That's all for now. New England's Entertainment listing for this weekend is "royally" postponed due to the "royal" happenings today.
