Foxwoods Looks to the Future

Scott Butera, Foxwoods chief executive, said the company has completed a major restructuring. "That is all behind us." So, even though it seems that both CT casinos continue to struggle with revenue numbers in CT, it looks like both are seeking expansion in other states - Massachusetts is only the beginning.

Design plans for a Foxwoods gambling resort in Milford call for a campus of low-rise buildings around a “town square green,” and come with a promise to maintain more than 90 percent of the development’s 187-acre site as open land, according to Foxwoods, which presented its plans to town officials on Monday.
Foxwoods also on Monday released the first renderings of the project, after weeks of furious design work. The casino giant joined the Milford venture as a partner in February and immediately began an overhaul of earlier plans.
For inspiration in the new design, “We looked at what we consider the grand New England resorts,” said Scott Butera, Those resorts are “buildings with beautiful rooftops and magnificent porches, and which integrate with their surroundings so there is both an indoor and outdoor experience,” he said.
“This is meant to be something that looks like it has been in New England for a hundred years and not something that is new and from another area,” he said. Other important parts to the proposal include:
  • The creation of 3,500 permanent jobs, with a hiring preference for local residence.
  • The resort would provide about $20 million per year in tax revenue to the town of Milford, and the development would spend about $50 million per year on items and services provided by local vendors and suppliers, according to Foxwoods.
  • A new interchange off Interstate 495
Foxwoods is competing with two urban proposals: Suffolk Downs in East Boston, proposing a casino at the horse track with partner Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts, which has released plans for a hotel and casino on the Mystic River waterfront in Everett.

Foxwoods Resort Casino is also making plans to make a play to build a casino next to the former Grossinger's hotel in Liberty, in the Catskills.
"We are extremely interested in developing a destination resort casino in the Catskills and the 500-acre Muss site at Grossinger's is perfectly situated to accomplish that goal," said Scott Butera, Foxwoods Resort and Casino president and chief operating officer.
"We believe that having more than one resort casino in the Catskills will help drive the governor's vision of promoting a world-class tourist destination. Over the last several weeks, we have been working with Muss to develop a plan to move forward. Together, we look forward to continuing our discussions with local and state elected officials, " Butera said.  "Foxwoods would pursue the Catskills project, even if it is selected for a license in Massachusetts.  We think the site is a terrific site ... prime for development."
Liberty Supervisor Charlie Barbuti said he's pleased with the renewed interest in Grossinger's. "I don't know how it is going to play out," Barbuti said. "They seem like the real deal." The site and area has been disappointed before when other previous ventures never panned out.

The Foxwood Brand continues to push forward.

That's all for now.
