They Did It!
It's been nine years since they set a world record at Mohegan Sun (for the World’s Largest Wedding Cake set back in February 2004) and on Saturday, they broke two in one day when they set world records for the Largest Slot Machine Tournament and Most Slot Machines Running The Same Game Simultaneously. Representatives from GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS was on-site to validate the records.
The record for largest tournament is for the most unique players in one venue in a 24-hour period. The Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, Calif., set the existing mark on Feb. 11, 2012 when 2,885 players participated in three rounds of a tournament played on 1,100 Bally-equipped machines.
Seemingly, with over 5000 slot machines, it should have been easy. But according to Mohegan Sun's Facebook page, the # of participants was 3001 and the # of slots running same game was 1610. Still enough for both records according to Guinness reps.
"We've had a number of tests over the last couple of months, so customers have had some practice," Bethany Seidel, Mohegan Sun's vice president of marketing and promotions, said. The casino teamed up with Las Vegas-based Bally Technologies, which has retooled 2,500 machines to play the same game during the tournament and then return to normal playing mode. Mohegan Sun operates more than 5,500 slots.

The top scorer claimed a $50,000 cash prize, with many others receiving cash prizes and free slot play. All who participated received $10 in free slot play.
